A growing family approached us to transform their recently purchased apartment into a contemporary home that would have clean lines and warm materials. Surveying the existing layout together, we soon realized that the major challenge of this project would be how to achieve a clear and logical flow for the space while working around the seemingly haphazard array of existing columns, risers and beams often found in apartment buildings built in the 1960s such as this one.

To address this, the design concept proposes a series of portal frames to encapsulate these existing building elements, while creating visual alignments and delineations between spaces. White oak was chosen as the primary portal frame material to add warmth and texture, and is set against a backdrop of whites and neutral tones. Stone slabs echo the same portal frame concept in the kitchen and bathrooms, creating a consistent language throughout while giving each of these spaces a unique identity.
